I'm running Houdini and embarrassingly struggling to get this connected. The only argument I have in my favour is that I cannot find any "connect hardware" or other connections options in Houdini... which look so easy to find in example shown here.

I've looked through the manuals, threads on this site etc.

What is the obvious, that which I'm failing to see ??

There is any option in Houdini, this is in Fritz GUI.

- The picture shown is for Fritz, and
- There is not such an option "Connect Hardware" in Houdini?

I do not have Houdini or any other GUI, it has been ages since I used any Chessbase GUI, I just want to clarify your answer.

Connect Hardware is an option that depends on the Auto-232 protocol. Chessbase supports it, WInBoard does not support it (only thru a pseudo engine winboard232d). The message here is that "Connect Hardware" is not supported by every GUI out there. Your best bet is to read the manual of your GUI. If is not there, then "is not there".
