Concerning STUCI and why it's never really done... here's a metaphor: Instead of being a construction worker, I'd rather be an architect.
Losing too many games because of a slow PC? No problem, nUCI it!

Re: What do you think? An ascii board...
This is my personal opinion zappa:
I am the person that prefers performance over looks. Currently, the engine has to talk to polyglot, then polyglot to winboard, winboard to STUCI and finaly STUCI to Yahoo(and the other way around). So, if your project eliminates two of the middle men I think some gain in performance would be achieve.
In the other hand, I wonder if some features will be lost ( like winboard ability to save games in pgn, and many others).
In either case, besides being chalenging, your project looks very promising.
Congratulations on the hard work you had done so far, keep the good work bud and if you need any help (testing and such) just let me(us) know.
Cheers

Using engines to cheat:
- It is not ethical,
- It is useless, nothing is gained (how can one be proud of a score earn with dishonesty?)
- You will be baned, sooner or later,
- It gives us (the true chess engine players) a bad reputation.
